Morning Time with the Pets

I begin to stir, but it’s because I have a cramp in my leg, not because I want to be awake yet. Too late, though. She’s noticed my movement.

“Goooood morning, Girl,” Dup says as she plops down next to me. She rolls over with an involuntary snort, which, in turn, rouses the cat…who is on Wellbutrin to help with her loss of appetite from her recent illness.

Seph creeps across my chest and begins to rub against Dup’s neck while humming, “Mellow Yellow” to herself. Dup is both thrilled and alarmed–the cat is not usually this friendly, but there again, she’s not usually on SSRI’s. “I love you, Dog, oh, I love you so-oh-oh much! Sing with me?”

Dup gives me a look that says, “Oh, God, what do I do?” I just shrug and laugh.

“I love you, too, Kitty,” she says cautiously.

“Sing with me,” Seph repeats. If she had eyelashes, she’d be batting them at this point. Instead, she begins to hum “Mellow Yellow” again, though she doesn’t really know the words. “They call me ‘mellow yellow;’ it’s frightening! Sing, Dog, sing!”

Dup doesn’t know the words, either, so instead she howls. Seph rolls over and giggles in delight. She’s actually not so yellow anymore–her jaundice has mostly cleared up. I think, though, she still likes the idea of being yellow, since I compared her to a banana, and I’d commented that she’d fit in well in banana trees where she could hunt small, Brazilian children. She’s never been anything close to a man-eater, but she likes the idea nonetheless. Daydreams of shut-in house cats, you see.

They both cuddle in closer, Dup by my side and Seph practically suffocating me with her weight on my chest. Dup kisses my nose first, then Seph’s forehead, and Seph begins to purr loudly. “I looooooove you, Dog! Oh, yes, oh, yes, oh, yes I do!” she croons and nuzzles her face into Dup’s neck. Within moments, she’s asleep again, and Dup relaxes.

“It’s the drugs,” I whisper.

“Or she’s just lost her mind,” Dup chuckles back.

“Well, that, too, I suppose. But, really, she’s never been quite in her right mind anyway. I think it’s sweet that she’s focused her affections on you, though.”

“Girl, don’t get me wrong–I love the Kitty. I love her so much. But she’s not supposed to love me back. Is she really going to be ok?” I think Dup maybe worried the most over Seph while she was hospitalized, and that’s saying a lot, since I was a complete basket case.

“Yeah, I think so. The fact that she fights too much for Bear and I to do her fluids anymore is really promising, and she seems to love eating again, so maybe we can even take her off these silly pills soon.”

“That would be good, I think.” Dup licks Seph’s head again and settles in closer to her crazy sister. It’s just about the sweetest thing I’ve ever seen, though, with reputations to protect, they still won’t let me take a picture to prove to the rest of the world how sweet they are.

I protect Dup, and she protects me when I need protecting, too. And now, because she loves her, Dup’s taken on the task of protecting Seph, too.

Dup eventually begins to snore again, and it is at this point that Seph wakes back up.

“Hey, Girl,” she whispers. Cats don’t really whisper though, so it comes out more like a hiss.

“Yes, Sepher?” I scratch behind her ears with a free hand.

“I have a secret.”

“And what’s that?”

“I love Dog.”

“I don’t think it’s a secret since you already told her before you passed out just now.”

“Shhhh! Yes it is. It’s my secret-secret. And you’re in on it, and Dup’s in on it, and it’s extra special and secret because of that.” She smiles and rolls over into the crook of Dup’s tummy where she settles again and dreams of bananas and Brazilian children and whatever else it is house cats dream of. Dup just continues to snore.

LOL! This is so touching and so hilarious at the same time. I love Hef’s mentality when she’s all drugged up. I’m really glad she’s doing better and that she secretly loves Duppy. 😀
