Pillow Talk with the Dog

“Hey, Duppy. Are you awake?” I ask.

            She snorts and rolls over.

“Dup,” I whisper and poke her belly.

            She snorts again: “Yes, Girl?”

“Should we go let the chickens out?”

“No. Too early. And I’m paralyzed.”

            “No you aren’t, you weirdo.”

She turns to face me and licks my nose. “See, Girl? See how paralyzed I am? I can hardly move! Quick! Rub my tummy. That’s the only thing that’ll save me.”

I scratch her belly as she settles in closer to me and begins to fall back asleep.

            “Hey, Dup?”

            “Yes, Girl?”

“Remember that time when you were just a little puppy—“

“Yes I do,” she interrupts me.

“Lemme finish. Remember that time when you were itty-bitty, and you decided I wasn’t moving fast enough and you jumped up and bit my butt?”

She begins to snicker and licks my nose again. “Well, what about it?” She says it so nonchalantly, as if it’s a societal norm for her to do so—I’m the sheep, she’s the herding dog.

“What the hell, Dup? You bit my butt!”

Now she’s laughing so hard she’s rolling from side to side, her tail flailing and limbs askew.

“God damn it, Dup!” I push her off the bed and hop down myself. She grins at me wildly and races down the hallway toward the backdoor leading to the chicken coop. As I stoop to pull my shoes on, she begins to laugh again. I open the door, she nips my butt…again…and she’s off into the morning dew and fog, tail wagging and roaring with laughter.

            I love my dog.

    I appreciated this, too.
Probably my favorite post, after the teeth-whitening one.

I know, right? She’s lazy, naughty, and insane all at once. 😀
